Printing tips
- In the print settings, pick 100% scale rather than Fit to page so each badge comes out at a true 4 x 3 inches.
- The two columns sit only 1/8 inch from the left and right paper edges, so on printers that can't print that close a background color stops short of the outer badge edge; a white background hides this.
- Select a cardstock paper type, and send heavier sheets through the manual feed slot if your printer has one.
- If your printer pushes everything toward one side, the offset control slides the layout back in 1/32 inch steps, up to 1/4 inch.
- Make the long vertical cuts first and the horizontal cuts second so the stack stays square in the paper cutter.
- Hold the name and title at least 1/8 inch inside each badge edge to forgive a slightly crooked trim.
Why 4 x 3 is the everyday conference badge size
Most conference registration desks use horizontal clear holders built for 3 x 4 inch inserts, so a 4 x 3 badge fits the supplies you are most likely to buy or already have in a storage closet. The width lets a long first name stay large. A proven arrangement is a logo band across the top, the first name in the middle at about 48 to 60 points, the last name just under it, then title and company at 14 to 18 points, with a colored strip along the bottom set by each attendee's group. Put the {{first}} token on its own line so the name people use in conversation is the biggest thing on the badge. Choose a portrait 3 x 4 badge instead when you want a credential look that hangs from a single top slot.
Trimming 4 x 3 badges from plain cardstock
The generic layout leaves a 1/4 inch gap between badges, so every gap takes two cuts. Export with cut lines on, stack only a few sheets at a time, and line up the first cut with the printed marks rather than the paper edge. A guillotine or rotary trimmer gives straighter edges than scissors and is far quicker for a few hundred badges. Cardstock is stiffer than copy paper and slides into holders without buckling, but check your printer's manual for the heaviest weight it accepts. If you have volunteers and no cutter, perforated 74459 insert sheets use the same badge size with no trimming, though they need their own template because the spacing on the sheet is different.

Do 4 x 3 badges fit the horizontal 3 x 4 inch holders sold for conferences?
Holders are usually labeled by insert size, so a horizontal holder listed for 3 x 4 inch inserts takes a badge 4 inches wide and 3 inches tall. Measure the opening if you are reusing holders from an older event, since some leave extra room and a trimmed badge can slide around inside.
How much text fits on a 4 x 3 conference badge?
Plan on a logo, a first name, a last name, one line for title and one for company, plus a group strip. Adding much more shrinks the name. Pronouns fit nicely as a small line under the name with the {{pronouns}} token. Leave session times and maps for the program, because text under about 10 points is hard to read on a hanging badge.
Can I print the generic 4 x 3 layout on Avery 74459 sheets?
No, even though the badge size matches. The generic layout centers six badges with 1/4 inch gaps, while the perforated sheet has its inserts touching with deeper top and bottom margins. Printing one on the other puts names across the perforations. Choose the Avery 74459 size in the editor whenever that stock is loaded in the tray.
Can one 4 x 3 design print different accent strips for speakers, staff and attendees?
Add a Group column to your list with values such as Speaker, Staff and Attendee. Each distinct value gets its own accent color, which the templates apply to strips and bars, and you can override the printed label, for example showing CREW for everyone in the Staff group.
