Printing tips
- Choose Actual size in the print window, since any automatic scaling spreads the six badges past their perforations.
- Pick a card or heavyweight paper setting and use the straight-through rear or manual slot when your printer offers one, because stiff insert stock can jam on a curved paper path.
- Run the alignment test on ordinary copy paper, stack it over a perforated sheet, and check against a lamp that each outline sits on its perforated rectangle.
- Correct an even shift with the offset control, which moves the layout in 1/32 inch steps to a limit of 1/4 inch each way, before you load the real inserts.
- Leave cut lines turned off, because the perforations already mark where each badge separates.
- Fold each perforation back and forth once before tearing so the edges come apart cleanly instead of fraying.
Avery 74459 perforated inserts or plain cardstock at 4 x 3?
Both options give you the same 4 x 3 badge, but the sheet work is different. The 74459 stock arrives pre-perforated with the inserts touching, so volunteers can tear badges apart at the registration table without a trimmer, and every edge comes out straight. The generic 4 x 3 layout on this site centers six badges on plain cardstock with a 1/4 inch gap between them, which means printing cut lines and trimming every sheet with a paper cutter. Cardstock is easy to find and works when you only need a few sheets or a heavier feel. Pick the perforated stock when you are printing dozens of sheets or when the people assembling badges won't have a cutter. The two layouts are not interchangeable, so match the size you choose in the editor to the paper in the tray.
Designing for a 74459 insert inside a clear holder
A perforated edge is never perfectly crisp, and a clear holder adds a frame around the insert, so keep names, titles and logos at least 1/8 inch from every edge. Because the inserts touch with no gap, a dark background that runs to the edge will show any small misalignment as a thin white sliver on one side and a colored sliver on the neighbor. A white or light background with a colored footer strip hides that. Many holders have a slot or clip hole near the top, so place the logo slightly lower than the very top edge. For the name, a first name around 44 to 56 points fills the width well, with title and company at 14 to 18 points.
Avery 74459 template questions
Is the Avery 74459 layout 4 x 3 or 3 x 4?
Avery describes the inserts as 3 x 4 inches, and on the sheet they sit 4 inches wide by 3 inches tall, two across and three down. That makes this template a landscape badge for horizontal holders. If you want a tall badge that hangs vertically, use the 3 x 4 portrait size on cardstock and trim it instead.
Why is there no space between badges on the 74459 template?
The template copies the stock itself: the inserts meet along perforations, with 1/4 inch of margin at the left and right edges and 1 inch at the top and bottom of the sheet. Adding gaps would push later badges off their perforated rectangles. That is also why light backgrounds are the safer choice on this stock.
What if my 74459 badges print slightly off the perforations?
Print the one-page alignment test on plain paper, place it over an insert sheet, and hold the pair against a light. If all six outlines sit the same distance off, nudge the layout with the printer offset in 1/32 inch steps and test again. If the error grows toward the bottom, check for scaling in the print dialog or a skewed feed.
Should cut lines be on when I export for 74459 sheets?
Turn them off. The perforations already separate the badges, and a printed cut line that lands a hair beside a perforation leaves a visible stray mark on the finished insert. Cut lines are meant for the generic layouts on plain cardstock, where you trim with a paper cutter and need a guide.
